British government has added 11 more nations to its official warning register regarding the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

The updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just recently, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after multiple serious events including the fatal demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic substance typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Travelers

Foreign Office minister a senior official emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While having drinks in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister said.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – get medical help right away."

The entire list of nations noted as posing a risk of methanol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
