English Football Updates: Mejbri Suspended for Misconduct; City Boss Says 'Defence Must Improve'
In the latest Premier League developments, a significant midfielder was given a lengthy suspension, a head coach has pointed out a defender's mistakes to make an argument, and Pep Guardiola has called for backline improvements following a chaotic win.
1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was given a four-match ban and a ÂŁ15,000 penalty following improper behaviour in a recent match versus Leeds United. The governing body said the player was referred a separate disciplinary panel following allegations where he spat in the direction of away fans at the 67th mark of a 2-0 win for Burnley.
A statement explained: “A Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during the Premier League match with Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted in breach of the laws of football and/or in a poor manner by engaging in abusive and/or unacceptable behaviour by spitting towards the area of Leeds United fans.”
It continued, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match suspension and a fine following a hearing. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published at a later date.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the Premier League standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Points to Adarabioyo's Errors to Make an Argument
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is not a problem for his club, highlighting that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing poorly in the defeat to Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in the poor result. He presented his argument by criticising Tosin, the most experienced player in the lineup, who delivered a mistake-riddled display in central defence.
“People always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, nobody was talking about older players. I understand that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but I think the reason why we didn’t win to Leeds is not because of inexperience, it was because we were not good enough.”
He added, “Who is the oldest one for us in the match? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 men, they were simply not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has stated the champions have taken lessons from their recent scare at Fulham and the game has now been forgotten. City survived for a 5-4 win in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about an hour played.
Coming after they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in the prior fixture, it raised further doubts regarding whether City possess resilient required to mount a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Good lessons, I hope. At this level, at all the clubs, one must learn from what happens in the good things and results and focus on the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse the cause, to not concede so many goals. With the three goals scored against Leeds, and the five by Fulham it shows our versions, right? So, always done plenty of good things. Yet the number of attempts did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So our ratio of chances conceded we can see too high. We must be better.”
Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Contracts
The Magpies' recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived from Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
This allows Wilson free to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's efforts have assumed some importance.
“My first few days in the job was when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly more secure than I was expecting,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that the club wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also would want to extend Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman for the match with Burnley this Saturday, and he likely to remain sidelined for a further period.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns Against Brighton
The Hammers' manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to start for the side play Brighton on Sunday, after serving a ban for the red card he received Liverpool.
“It is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it will not be repeated because he personally admitted the error. We spoke in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”
He also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are 18th ahead of Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he said. “It's a reality. We have to confront it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot shy away from it.”
Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino
Mikel Merino could continue as Arsenal’s centre-forward even when the club's usual strikers are fit again. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift number nine because of injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the first goal against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second in a 2-0 victory that maintained {their|
