Waymo's Self-Driving Vehicles Planned for London Streets Next Year.

The US-based firm Waymo has declared that its autonomous taxis will be on offer for booking on London's roads beginning next year.

UK Capital Named as Pioneering European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.

The UK capital will become the pioneering European city to host an self-driving taxi service, comparable with those currently in use in San Francisco and four other American cities using Waymo's innovative technology.

First Testing Phase to Start with Trained Operators.

Waymo confirmed that its cars are currently en route to London and will begin driving on the city's streets in the next few weeks with trained human specialists behind the wheel.

The company – originally formed as a spin-off from the tech giant's self-driving car program and part of the larger corporate umbrella – stated it would increase operations and partner with the UK transport authorities and the city's mobility organization to secure the required approvals to offer totally self-driving trips by 2026.

Growing Involvement in Self-Driving Transport In London.

Additional companies, such as Uber and the UK-based tech company Wayve, have also revealed their own strategies to pilot autonomous vehicles in the city next year.

This is in response to the government officials announcing it would speed up regulations enabling public trials to occur before legislation supporting autonomous cars passes in full.

Complete Introduction Anticipated After New Legislation Takes Effect.

A fuller deployment of self-driving taxis is expected in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act is fully implemented in the latter part of 2027.

Waymo presently has connections to the UK after establishing its first European engineering hub in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also starting operations in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover electric vehicles, marking its second current project beyond the United States.

“Evidence confirms how to effectively grow totally self-driving transport solutions, and we look forward to extend the positive impacts of our systems to the Britain,” said the company executive, adding that the innovation was “improving road safety and travel more available”.

Waymo introduced its autonomous vehicles in 2020 and now states it has transported more than ten million passengers in the US.

Despite some concerning occurrences, Waymo asserted that statistics showed that cars driven by drivers were associated with crashes that hurt people on foot significantly more frequently than its driverless cars.
